OASIS

Our friend at Flatbush Gardner sent along this great resource for finding who owns lots within NYC. The OASIS system (http://www.oasisnyc.net/) seems to have a ton of info though we can't seem to figure it out. Give it a try and see if you can figure out our local empty lots at Church Ave b/w Chester and Story, corner of Caton and E5th, Caton b/w E7th and E8th and McDonald & Ft. Hamilton.
UPDATE! FG posted a how to on using OASIS!
The OASIS Mapping Service (Flatbush Gardner)
The Kensington (Brooklyn) blog notes that it "seems to have a ton of info though we can't seem to figure it out." They mention a couple of empty lots, including one on Caton Avenue which caught my eye when I passed it on my way to visit their East 4th Street Community Garden this past Saturday. I'll use that empty lot as an example. What follows is a step by step tutorial on how to use the OASIS Mapping Service to get information about your neighborhood, and get details about a particular piece of property.
1. Select a Theme
2. Choose your Layers
3. Redraw the map
4. Refine your Layers
5. Zoom in
6. Identify

It's not pretty, but I just posted a tutorial on how to use the OASIS Mapping Service, using the vacant lot on Kensington as a case study.

I've been using this for a few years now to find out property info.

Here's how I do it:

Using the link provided takes you to the main page. The only thing you need to do here is click on:

"Go to the Oasis Map" on the left.

You will then see a map of the whole city. Don't worry about all the layers on the right. Just enter the street address and borough in the appropriate blanks at the top. Usually as soon as you enter the borough it will start to zoom to the location you entered. If not, hit "redraw map".

It will zoom to the lot you requested. You can then zoom, pan, etc. or pick another lot.

Once the lot info pulls up, you can link directly to the DOB website (among other things) for that property, which shows permits, stop work orders, etc.

Enjoy!

One thing I can do with OASIS which I can't do with any other online resources is find out the address of a property if I don't already know it. The tutorial shows you how to research with incomplete information, like "What's the address of that vacant lot on Caton between East 7th and 8th Streets?"

As you note, once you identify the property, you get the info and links you need to dive further and answer ancillary questions, like "And who owns it?"

OASIS used to display the owner right on that info page. I think they dropped it for privacy reasons, even though the information is still available from other public, online sources.

doesnt propertyshark do the same thing?

I'm also registered with PropertyShark. I hardly ever use it.

I've only found a couple of maps that PropertyShark generates that OASIS doesn't provide. One nice thing that you can get from PropertyShark, but not OASIS, is a map with street addresses overlaid onto it.

PropertyShark retains Copyright for everything you get through them. They place restrictions on how you can use and reuse the information, even though they're based on largely the same public information sources as OASIS. Since I'm often posting the maps I create to Flickr and using then on my blog, it's important to me that the maps be unrestricted.

Last, PropertyShark requires registration. OASIS does not.

matt- i think that lost is owned by the nursery across the street and that's where they store some of their plants and possibly xmas trees in the winter.

Once again your loud speaker is disturbing our neighborhood. Obviously there is some sort of backwards commitment to the well being of our homes. I will be filing a complaint with city officials first thing tomorrow morning. Do NOT bring your disruptions near Beverley Road again.

i always thought they had their original location there and moved across the street. its amazing they can afford to keep that area unused through the rest of the year.

I've looked into this - the lot on Caton between 7th and 8th is NOT owned by the landscaping place. To my knowledge, it is owned by the same company that is building the apartments across from the stables. So maybe there will be more apartments...

The people from Stable Brooklyn have info on who owns that lot. It was originally supposed to be a nursing home, that was abandoned and now I think those plans are back on.

you mean a house just for nurses????? thats not fair!
